Baltimore (53-86) at New York (86-53)

For most of this year, Baltimore mustered little success against the New York Yankees. However, the last-place Orioles are in position for a rare sweep in the Bronx.
The Orioles go for their first three-game road sweep of football jersey
New York in more than 24 years when they meet the AL East leaders Wednesday afternoon.
Baltimore (53-86), which halted a 10-game skid to the Yankees nearly three months ago, hasn’t swept a series at Yankee Stadium since June 6-8, 1986, when Scott McGregor, Mike Boddicker and Ken Dixon beat Ron Guidry, Tommy John and Ed Whitson, respectively.
After a 4-3 victory in the opener, the Orioles cruised to a 6-2 win Tuesday night, denying CC Sabathia(notes) his first 20-win season and handing the hefty left-hander his first home loss since July 2, 2009.
“They kind of took my aggressiveness away,” said Sabathia, who was 16-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his previous 21 home starts.
Adam Jones’(notes) two-run single helped stake the Orioles to Dallas Cowboys jersey
a 3-0 first-inning lead. Nolan Reimold(notes) added a long two-run homer in the third to make it 5-1.
“When (Sabathia) makes a mistake, you’ve got to jump on it,” Reimold said. “He doesn’t make too many.”
Baltimore has won four in a row six times this year, and is 21-13 since former Yankees manager Buck Showalter took over the club in August. The Orioles’ last five-game winning streak was June 17-21, 2009, all against interleague opponents.
The Yankees (86-53), who had won eight in a row heading into this series, had their division lead over Tampa Bay reduced to 1 1/2 games after the Rays ripped Boston 14-5.
Lance Berkman(notes) had three of New York’s eight hits Tuesday to continue his recent surge. After being activated from the disabled list Sept. 1, Berkman is 8 for 16, but has no homers and hasn’t driven in a run.
In the finale, Baltimore will go with Brad Bergesen(notes) (6-10, 5.47 ERA) as he again tries to match his win total as a rookie last season. The right-hander failed in his first attempt Thursday, surrendering five runs, eight hits and a season-high five walks in a 6-4 loss to the Red Sox.
He had been 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his previous six starts.
Bergesen is 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA over two career starts in the Bronx, and his only appearance there this year was miserable. In 2 1-3 innings, Bergesen was tagged for six runs and seven hits in a 9-1 defeat June 2.
Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson(notes) hasPittsburgh Steelers jersey
three hits and three RBIs in five career at-bats against Bergesen.
Ivan Nova(notes) (1-0, 2.89) will be making his second start and third appearance at home for New York as he faces Baltimore for the first time.
The rookie right-hander has no record and a 4.76 ERA at home. He gave up three runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 7-3 win over Toronto on Friday.

Thome homers again and Twins top Royals 10-3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Jim Thome(notes) has found a band of brothers in Minnesota. He’s showing off his big swing like the oldest sibling.
Thome hit another towering homer, Delmon Young(notes) drove in four runs nfl jersey
and the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 10-3 on Tuesday night to take their largest AL Central lead in 10 days.
Francisco Liriano(notes) (13-7) raised his second-half record to 7-0 in 10 starts, giving up seven hits and two runs in seven easy innings. J.J. Hardy(notes) had three RBIs for the Twins, who scored six times in the third against Brian Bannister(notes) (7-12) and moved 4 1/2 games ahead of Chicago in the division race.
“You hope the good times last as long as they can,” Thome said.
The White Sox lost to Detroit 9-1, ending their seven-game winning streak. The Twins have won five straight, 10 of their last 12 and 33 of 45.
“They’re not leading this division for nothing,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “They’re a good team that swings the bat. They catch the ball. They throw strikes.”
Thome has likened his new team to a family, smiling his way through his first season playing for his former division rival.
“We’re all genuinely rooting for each other,” he said.
The Royals lead the majors with 53 one-run games, just ahead of the Twins’ 49. After one-run decisions in eight of their last nine games, winning six of those tight ones, the Twins were eager for a breather. That’s exactly what they got, thanks to Young and Hardy at the bottom of the lineup.
Manager Ron Gardenhire was able to take some of Indianapolis Colts jersey
his regulars out early, and newly recalled relievers Glen Perkins(notes) and Pat Neshek(notes) worked an inning apiece.
“It’s a great feeling to go out there and not have that much pressure on you,” said Liriano, who reached his career high in wins.
After tailing off following his torrid July, Young bounced back in a big way. Thome? He’s been steady all season long.
Just seconds after the White Sox score flashed final, he went deep in the sixth inning on a 3-2 count to make it 10-2. This was Thome’s 22nd homer of the season, estimated by the team’s media relations staff at 452 feet. It tied him with Frank Robinson for eighth place on the career list with 586.
“He keeps hitting it farther and farther and farther,” Young said.
The ball soared over right field and past the American flag, traveling to almost exactly the same place his estimated 480-foot shot landed in Monday’s game against the Royals. Thome has four home runs in his last three games.
After a little prompting from the Target Field crowd, Thome stepped out of the dugout and waved to the fans.
“It’s fun to watch, and it’s a tough act to follow,” Young said.
For the sake of performance, perhaps, but not in terms of production. With Thome on base ahead of him in the second, third and fourth innings following two walks and a hit batsman, Young doubled, singled and doubled. He established career highs in doubles (40) and RBIs (97).
Josh Fields(notes) hit his first homer for the Royals, Alex Gordon(notes) made a hit-stealing diving catch in left field, and Jesse Chavez(notes) pitched two hitless innings of relief. But that was about all the Royals had to be happy about. They fell to a season-high 24 1/2 games out of first place and a season-high 24 games under .500 (57-81).
Right-hander Luke Hochevar(notes) gave up five hits and three runs in three innings — including the moon ball by Thome.
“That pitch is definitely not where I was trying to go with it,” Hochevar said.
Bannister lasted only 2 2-3 innings. All seven runs against him scored with two outs, with Jason Kubel(notes), Young and Hardy delivering the RBIs in the third. This was his first start for the Royals since Aug. 2, missing time with a rotator cuff injury. He’s struggling with his off-speed pitches.
“You’re just not going to beat a good team at this level throwing fastballs, especially a below-average one,” Bannister said. “I haven’t been able to throw a cutter for months.”
NOTES: Matt Tolbert(notes) hit his third triple in four days for the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Twins, playing 3B again for Danny Valencia(notes). Gardenhire wants to be cautious with Valencia’s hamstring, and he might not be back until Friday. “I don’t want this to turn into something where he really goes out there and pops it, and then we’re done for the year,” Gardenhire said. … Royals prospect Clint Robinson finished his season for Double-A Northwest Arkansas with a Triple Crown, just the third winner in Texas League history. The 25-year-old native of Jefferson City, Mo., a 25th-round draft pick in 2007, hit .325 with 29 homers and 98 RBIs.

ourn helps Astros beat Cubs

CHICAGO (AP)—Michael Bourn(notes) has been putting it all on display lately, whether it’s running the bases, hitting the ball hard down the line or backing up his pitcher on the defensive end.
Bourn had three hits and three RBIs, Brett Wallace(notes) hit his nfl throwback jerseys
first career home run, and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 on Tuesday night.
“The last couple of games he’s (Bourn) been outstanding. “Today he was swinging the bat and he ran the bases extremely well,” said Astros manager Brad Mills(notes).
Bourn also scored twice for the Astros who won for the 12th time in 16 games.
“Sometimes you have games like this. But sometimes you might have one hit and that might be the deciding factor. You might get a walk. Whatever it is. I’m trying to do something. It might be on defense,” said Bourn.
Astros starter Nelson Figueroa(notes) (5-2) pitched five innings to earn the victory. He allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked three. Figueroa was backed by four scoreless innings from the Houston bullpen, which allowed only one hit.
“He (Figueroa) had to work really hard to get through that 5. He used a lot of pitches to get through that,” said Mills.
Cubs starter Carlos Silva(notes) (10-6), who made his first start since Aug. 1, was tagged for six runs on nine hits in five innings. In his previous start at Colorado, he left after recording only one out with an abnormal heart rate. Silva underwent a surgical procedure called cardiac ablation to correct the problem a week later. He returned after two rehab starts for Class A Peoria, but was far from regaining his stuff that helped him win his first eight decisions of the season.
“Probably not that unusual coming off a situation like this. Obviously you would like to see some improvement … but there are a variety of things going on. It’s late but you hope after some more activity that his arm strength will be better and his stuff will be better as well,” said Cubs manager Mike Quade.
Silva said his heart felt fine.
“I feel really good, especially after the second inning, I felt more comfortable on the mound, but the result wasn’t good at all,” said Silva.
Tyler Colvin(notes) drove in two runs on Dallas Cowboys jersey
two hits for the Cubs.
Trailing 2-1 in the second inning, Wallace homered to tie the game. Tommy Manzella(notes) and Jason Castro(notes) followed with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Bourn hit a two-run double in the left-center gap to give the Astros a 4-2 lead.
Leading 4-3 in the fifth, Bourn led off with a single and stole before scoring on Jeff Keppinger’s(notes) single. Hunter Pence(notes) followed with a double down the right-field line, scoring Keppinger from first without a throw.
Bourn led off the game with a triple to right-center and scored on Keppinger’s RBI single.
“He was going from homeplate (1st inning triple). That was very nice to see. A standup triple,” said Mills.
In the first inning, Kosuke Fukudome(notes) led off with a double and score on Marlon Byrd’s(notes) single. Byrd scored on Colvin’s fielder’s choice.
Micah Hoffpauir(notes) walked in the third inning and scored on Colvin’s triple.
Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro(notes) spent his second game on the bench after not knowing how many outs there were in the seventh inning of Chicago’s 18-5 loss to the Mets. The rookie came into the game with the third best batting average in the National League at .317.
Quade is unsure if he will play him on Wednesday night.
“I will sleep on that tonight and contemplate. He’s had a couple of Minnesota Vikings jersey
good days and has done a lot of extra work and has had some time, so we will see,” said Quade. “I asked him to get about his business, you don’t want have this wind up as time off with nothing gained.”
NOTES: Before the game, a statue of Hall of Famer Billy Williams was dedicated by the Chicago Cubs outside Wrigley Field on Tuesday. The sculpture was unveiled before Chicago’s home game against the Houston Astros. Williams was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife, Shirley. Also in attendance were former teammates Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Ron Santo and Glenn Beckert, and Chicago dignitary Rev. Jesse Jackson. … Bourn also added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Korie Lucious goes over the legal limit

Not that it would have mattered anyway, because Korie Lucious is only 20. But the point stands: Lucious' arrest Monday morning on charges of drunken driving is bad news for Lucious, for coach Tom Izzo, and for the Michigan State Spartans in nfl jerseys
general.

The news is still coming in, but here's what the world knows so far. Lucious was pulled over at 2:30 a.m. Monday in East Lansing. He was administered a breathalyzer test. He registered a .09 blood alcohol level. The legal limit in Michigan is .08. Lucas isn't yet old enough to drink, so the legal limit doesn't apply to his predicament; he would be in trouble even if he would have been at .07 or .06. (Lucious' age makes the theoretical discussion over whether .09 should be considered "drunken driving" beside the point.)

In the meantime, Tom Izzo is waiting to best nfl jerseys
comment until he "gathers all the facts."

The immediate repercussions are hard to gauge. Punishments vary as widely as coaching styles. Lucious could miss a percentage of the season, or he could miss all of it. That will depend on how lenient Izzo is feeling, whether Lucious shows the appropriate amount of regret, and whether Lucious has a record of renting space in Izzo's famed doghouse, a la dismissed senior guard Chris Allen. (Which, to my knowledge, he doesn't.)

Speaking of Allen, two things. One: If Izzo was willing to dismiss his senior guard for a variety of closed-door, team-related, non-illegal offenses, does Lucious stand a chance to be back this season? And two: As Jeff Eisenberg notes, does Izzo wish he'd have repaired things with Allen rather than boot him off the team? Lucious' improved play in 2009-10 -- especially his impressive stint in place of injured guard Kalin Lucas -- was one of the reasons Michigan State was supposed to be able to easily discard Allen. They had china nfl jerseys
other pieces in place. But what now?

All of that remains to be seen; we'll wait for Izzo's response to the facts he continues to gather. But at this stage, it's all ugly. Michigan State's wild offseason just got a little bit wilder.

BYU in the WCC? Hmmm

In the near future, the Brigham Young basketball Cougars are going to be playing said basketball in the West Coast Conference. This ... intrigues me.

First off, if you're interested in how things came to this cheap nfl jerseys
-- the BYU/Mountain West/Western Athletic/West Coast expansion stories have been a confusing whirlwind to me -- be sure to read Andy Katz's story, which essentially broke today's BYU news last night. And for the football repercussions, check out my counterpart in the alternate dimension that is College Football Nation, Andrea Adelson, who has a collection of informative thoughts on the subject.

But what we're interested in is college basketball. To that end, it's difficult to say whether this is a wholly positive step for BYU hoops. But it's also hard to see it as a negative. Sure, the WCC is filled with teams whose arenas don't come close to the Mountain West's average hoops home, and BYU is going to be playing in front of high school-esque crowds for much of its regular season. Can BYU put together a schedule tough enough to keep it among the nation's elite? Can it dominate the conference enough to be consistently considered one of the best mid-majors in the cheap authentic nfl jerseys
country? (And now that it's in the WCC, is BYU actually, like, a real mid-major?)

There's another school who willingly plows that path each year: Gonzaga. Granted, the schools are vastly different. BYU has a massive football program and 30,000 undergraduates; Gonzaga doesn't field a football team and has just under 5,000 students on campus. But if we're speaking strictly about basketball, there's no reason why BYU can't become another Gonzaga in Gonzaga's own conference. Head coach Dave Rose has established the Cougars as one of the nation's better non-Big Six teams over the past five years. With that (assumed) extra football revenue, Brigham Young has no shortage of resources at its disposal.

The challenge then, is in mimicking the Gonzaga model well. The Zags have built themselves from plucky mid-major to elite national program; until BYU does the same, the Cougars will find it more difficult to schedule. Actually, correction: They'll find it difficult anyway. But if BYU can reasonably recreate what Gonzaga does, the Cougars' basketball program doesn't need to take a plunge into sub-red line mediocrity. And the WCC should be more entertaining than ever.

I'm not sure if that's a win-win, or if discount nfl jerseys
BYU hoops fans are jazzed about taking on the likes of Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara each year, but at the very least, it doesn't have to be a bad thing. I think.

Goodell meetings did not go well Locker Room

Earlier this week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell opened the meeting with the Baltimore Ravens player, which as a link between league players and owners. After a player was in the room, that line is pretty big laugh.
I could hear, certainly the children laugh when he said, said Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth sent on in a telephone interview Friday.
Goodell has said something similar when he met the heads of cheap nfl jerseys
the players in training camp, too. And he had a similar reaction here.
Sounds like a good idea - the commissioner of the NFL will make a camp for the players personally. At each stop, Goodell has closed the door to the locker room and opened the floor for questions. Is the encounter between man and man, without coaches and without lawyers, to accompany him to the negotiating table during negotiations ACB official. And players to send a beam of this article says that everyone respected.
But the player does not think Goodell was ready for the type of questions was in front of his locker.
Fujita said Goodell opened the meeting at Camp Browns players say fire away if they had questions of the ABC, and sure the guys from hell. Fifteen minutes into the session, Fujita said Goodell looked at his clock and said it was time to close because of coach Eric Mangini wanted the back room.
Fujita said he left the room and Mangini said: Coach, it will be some time back then and continued the discussion with the Commissioner for 30 minutes.
At one point during the meeting, discussion of the rookie salary scale, Fujita said the players had submitted a proposal in this case for months, but had no reply. Fujita was a copy of the proposal and asked the Commissioner if he had bothered to read aloud.
I do not think he wanted me to, Joe Flacco Baltimore Fujita said.In Goodell quart full of questions about the rookie salary scale to read, and when the owner put in a provision plan, which guarantees that the savings plan be implemented would pay for established veterans. Veterans like Ray Lewis, Derrick Mason and Matt Birk stepped in.
In Jacksonville, the star running back Maurice Jones-Drew Goodell extend down in detail the plans of the owner in the season to 18 games, and what to do to replace the players for the extra work and an increased risk of damage and health, that can come with him.
In Kansas City, Aguas Goodell directly asked if the owner to reduce health benefits for the players in the event of a lockout in 2011. Tamba Hali linebacker got up and immediately asked why the owners chose the collective agreement.
If so, not the designated route Goodell. What the Commissioner has found an attitude of anger among the players, who are worried they set in 2011.
Commissioner's Office spokesman Greg Aiello said Goodell has so far met with eight different teams, and will meet with the Colts on Saturday. Aiello said, have been addressed, the concussions, helmets, safety of the players in an extended season, and questions of Denver Broncos jersey
the former players. Aiello said that if the players receive no direct answers to questions about the cost-benefit analysis is that Goodell do not think it was a good format to respond.
In conversation with players, it seems that if they got the same answer when Goodell was asked why he did not directly answer questions. And it sounds as if he did not.
Foxworth, water and Fujita has served the Union's executive and has served on the bargaining sessions with Goodell and the owners during this process. But all said how glad he watched the other players in their teams - the stars through the rank and file - Go to the questions that they are clean.
This last point is that Foxworth is seen as a problem. And he thinks Goodell no direct answers to the questions of the players were giving, at least from their voters that the real problems at the heart of the ABC matter of the inability of owners among themselves is in agreement on things like revenue sharing. (Goodell) was not surprised, but I think a lot of trouble with, since it is clear that some positions in the NFL is, those who do not all agree, said Foxworth. I think the greater the revenue sharing, not everyone sees eye to eye on salary caps and things like that. I think that will be Jerry Jones, George Steinbrenner.
Goodell has repeatedly described as owner-US agreement on the cost-benefit analysis. For example, quotes the collective will of the owners that the season was without a salary cap (not always the result of a new contract before last March played.) He also denied that the owners of the players in 2011, a block efforts to address the intention of something new, also said if the players and the NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, they believe that is exactly what is planned.
Given the deep differences between the two sides to these issues, Aiello said Goodell expects these issues in these meetings field.
He said he believed that such talks are productive.
The players are also welcome. It is not often that an opportunity to make the Commissioner.
There is a feeling of Dallas Cowboys jersey
frustration clear in his face, said Waters. The man said, Wait a minute - you do not answer our questions, and you could see he was ready to go. I think he took a big leap to go, without a trainer or one of its directors or anyone else. It took a courageous stand. But I do not think he quite for what to expect, prepare.

New rules to limit the NFL head injuries

HOUSTON (AP) NFL referees to protect more responsibility this season for the players of the first shell hit on the head and neck.
The league has expanded its rules to prevent defense of football jersey
players to take pictures on their shoulders. Groups of officials with the team in training camp together to discuss the changes.
Referee Walt Anderson, also the head referee of the Big 12, led a meeting with the Houston Texans on Friday. Commissioner Roger Goodell said he was very committed to find in discussions with the Committee of the league rules and referees for ways to limit the number of head injuries, while maintaining the integrity of the party.
The revised rules prohibit a player on the floor and enter using the helmet to a player in a defenseless position at the head and neck taken. The old rule applies only to the beneficiaries, beaten, but now applied to the whole world.
Anderson, one of 17 referees team leaders, said officials will closely monitor the receivers this season, and choose to care if the players are caught in vulnerable positions.
In recent years, said Mr. Anderson, the defensive players can hit receivers in the head when the recipient has got both feet on the ground. Now, officials of Houston Texans jersey
the receiver a split second longer, is basically in a place where he can defend, said Anderson.
Also new this season when a player lost his helmet, whistle blows the play is immediately. And now, into goals on the pitch and extra point attempts, the defense can not take place every player on the line directly above the gate, which is considered in a state of helplessness.
The NFL has already adopted the book of rules to protect players from concussions and their effects.
The league has stringent guidelines for the return to players they suffer implemented, and each team should consult an independent neurologist, when a head injury.
Anderson said that medical experts established the effects of concussions, the referee at a meeting this year the rules.
Anderson said the company will monitor the impact of Green Bay Packers jersey
the new rules in the season finale, and then judge whether they are effective enough to have to limit injuries.
Anderson expects further changes in the rules of the shocks in the coming years. One day he sees the use of arbitrators helmets.
