26 sep 10 Cook, Griffin Say They're Ready

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Chris Cook says he's ready. Cedric Griffin says he's getting close, too.
The Minnesota Vikings listed both cornerbacks as questionable on nfl throwback jerseys
Friday's injury report, and there seems to be a decent chance they'll make their season debuts on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Cook was a full participant in practice for a third straight day on Friday. Afterward, he said he rotated with starter Antoine Winfield and Griffin during team drills and all three players worked together in the nickel defense.
``Last week, I wasn't taking reps with the (starting) defense,'' said Cook, who had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on Aug. 29. ``This week, I took reps with the defense, and I was doing defense and show team, just to try to get my wind up. That was pretty successful, because I feel pretty good running around out there.''
Griffin hasn't played in a game since blowing out his left knee in the NFC championship game on Jan. 24. He remained limited in practice throughout this week, as he has been since the Vikings activated him off the physically unable to perform list Sept. 4.
``It's getting there,'' Griffin said. ``I'm getting more reps on the scout team and on 49ers jersey
defense right now, so they're allowing me to run around a little bit more, just kind of test my leg out, and it's doing well for me right now.''
The presence of either or both cornerbacks would boost the Vikings secondary against Detroit, which leans heavily on 6-foot-5 receiver Calvin Johnson. Cook (6-2) and Griffin (6-foot) are the two tallest cornerbacks on the Vikings roster, with the rest all 5-10 or shorter.Colts jersey

``They are getting closer,'' coach Brad Childress said. ``They had nice weeks of practice here.''
Defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy (knee) also was listed as questionable. Everyone else on the Vikings' injury report - receivers Bernard Berrien (knee) and Percy Hardin (hip), quarterback Brett Fare (ankle/right elbow), linebacker Ben Leer (back), left tackle Bryant McKinney (finger) and center John Sullivan (calf) - are probable.
NOTES: Vikings S Adieu Williams was fined $5,000 for his Saints jersey
unnecessary roughness penalty in Sunday's loss to Miami, an NFL spokesman said on Friday. Williams was fined for ``striking (a) defenseless receiver in (the) head and neck area.'' He also was penalized on the play, which came on the opening drive of the third quarter, but it was offset by an infraction on the Dolphins.

Browns TE Moore dealing with concussion

Browns tight end Evan Moore thought he had survived a vicious hit. Then the stadium started spinning.
Cleared by Cleveland's medical staff to go back on the field two nfl jersey
plays after being clobbered by Kansas City rookie safety Kendrick Lewis, Moore was starting to run when his world began to rotate.
''I went back out and ran the pass route, I knew there was a problem,'' Moore said. ''I was dizzy and felt like I was going to fall over.''
On the same day doctors warned Congress about the risks of permanent brain damage to athletes who aren't properly protected from head trauma, Moore recalled his own scare during the third quarter of Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.
Moore sustained a concussion - he said the first of his career - on the hard hit by Lewis, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
After going down, Moore shook his head as he has done after taking big hits before and jogged to Cleveland's sideline, where he was met by team trainers. He felt normal and told them so. The 6-foot-6, 250-pounder had taken jarring hits and figured this was just another one.
''It was a good hit,'' Moore said, ''but I didn't black out or anything. When I took the hit, it wasn't something where I felt like I had a concussion. I felt like I just took a good hit and came off and coach said, 'Are you all right?' I said, 'I'm fine.'''
Or so he thought.
Back in the huddle, Moore listened to quarterback Seneca Wallace call the play and then lined up for a third-and-8 play. He still felt fine. Seconds later, he wasn't.
''I ran a route and didn't feel right,'' Moore said Thursday as his teammates dressed for practice. ''So I told the trainer, 'something happened, this just isn’t right.'''
Moore came off the field again, and this time he was taken to the Browns' locker room, where he was diagnosed with the concussion.
''I want to make it real clear: It's not something where I came off and the coaches said, 'Hey, get back in there, you're fine','' he said. ''It was something where I felt fine until I ran again. And as soon as I felt that, we went into the locker room.''
The fact that Moore re-entered the game following the jarring tackle led to speculation that the Browns mishandled his injury. Moore, though, said the team acted accordingly and he made it clear that he was responsive to the team's medical staff, which did not detect he was concussed.
Coach Eric Angina said the Browns treated Moore properly.
''I don't think we lacked caution,'' he said. ''I don't think it was a function New Orleans Saints jersey
of, 'Forget about what happened, send him back in.'
We have the trainer and the doctor on the sideline, that's never a coaching decision. Everybody is doing the best they can to make sure the players' safety is first. I know how well (head trainer) Joe (Sheehan) is and how good our doctors are and we are going to work each game to make sure that we don't put a guy in a spot that he shouldn't be in.Dallas Cowboys jersey

''It's important to us not to do that.''
Moore's concussion is the second confirmed by the Browns since the start of training camp. Safety Nick Sorensen was hospitalized following a violent helmet-to-helmet collision during an exhibition game in Detroit last month.
Per the NFL's policy on head injuries, Moore visited an independent doctor to be evaluated and tested for the head injury. He has not been given permission to practice, but said he has not had any symptoms in several days and it's possible he could be practicing again on Friday.
Moore said the league's efforts to educate its players on the risks of head injuries have raised his awareness about them. He pointed to one of the new signs hanging in the locker room that promotes head safety. It's one thing for others preach caution, but Moore, who earned a bachelor's degree in political science and master's in sociology from Stanford, said it's an individual's responsibility.
Moore knows of players who will lie to stay on the field.
He's not one of them.
''I love football, but when you start talking about putting your head at risk, it's not happening,'' he said. ''Some guys might still have issues and say they're going to play anyway - good for them. But if I don't feel quite right, there's no way I'm going out on the field.''
Moore knows he can't play forever, but he won't do anything to San Francisco 49ers jersey
jeopardize his health or career goals.
If he can survive the NFL's school or hard knocks, Moore wants to go to law school.
''That's my goal,'' he said. ''I'm just going to be real cautious with this. I'll put any part of my body at risk but my head.''

PRO FOOTBALL Words of caution The Texans are off to an exciting start, but coach Gary Kubiak warns

Cowboys jersey
ONLINE: Join John McClain for a chat at 11:30 a.m. today. chron.com/sports
After defeating Indianapolis and Washington, the Texans are one of the NFL's most intriguing early-season success stories.
Now they host the winless Dallas Cowboys, who rank as one of football jersey
the league's biggest disappointments.
"But they're two plays from being 2-0," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Monday.
While the Texans were beating the Colts 34-24 and the Redskins 30-27 in overtime, the Cowboys were losing to Washington 13-7 and Chicago 27-20.
Kubiak found out Monday he'll have his best player, receiver Andre Johnson, available against the Cowboys. The MRI on Johnson's right ankle showed a mild sprain.
"We feel better about it today than we did coming out of the game," Kubiak said about Johnson, who had 12 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown Sunday. "He'll be day-to-day as we head into the weekend."
Expect Johnson to play against the Cowboys.
Tight end James Casey won't play against the Cowboys. He wasn't as fortunate after his MRI. Kubiak said Casey will miss some games.
"James is a little more severe," Kubiak said. "They're both going to be fine. It's just James has a longer road back than Andre."
Rookie Garrett Graham, the fourth-round pick, will be the third tight end against the Cowboys. He'll be active for the first time.
"They're the same team that was loaded with talent at the start of Buffalo Bills jersey
the season," Kubiak said about the Cowboys. "I know they're going to play great when they come in here.
"We'll have to play a lot better than we played (at Washington), but I don't have to tell our players that. I think we knew that when we left the field."
Kubiak and his players know they can't fall behind the Cowboys by 17 points with time running out in the third quarter and expect to escape with another victory.
Romo poses challenge
Kubiak and his players know they can't allow Tony Romo to become the third consecutive quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards against them.
"We gave up some big plays," Kubiak said. "They (Redskins) did a great job. They schemed us up pretty good. We really, really struggled. But we did have some good stops in the fourth quarter."
Defensive end Mario Williams recorded three sacks, giving him four sacks and eight hurries in two games.
Williams and Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware are two of the league's premier pass rushers.
"Mario just revved his game up and kind of took over and made sure (Donovan McNabb) was having to get rid of the ball," Kubiak said about the fourth quarter and overtime. "We've got some things we've got to clean up there.
Growing pains
"I know we're young back there, but that's no excuse. We've got to get better and get better quick because people are going to throw it on us until we step up and stop it. We've got to improve from that standpoint."
The Texans and Cowboys are 1-1 against each other, with Steelers jersey
each winning in their home stadium. Dallas is coming off an 11-5 season in which it won a playoff game. The Texans are coming off their first winning season.
"I think we've come to expect to play in great games - that's the NFL - and get in them and be willing to make a play and be the difference maker," Kubiak said. "I think we've grown up from that standpoint."
The Texans will find out Sunday at Reliant Stadium just how much they've grown up.

COWBOYS/NFL

Career games with at least 10 catches for at least 100 yards by Houston's Andre Johnson. He is tied with Marvin Harrison for second-most such games in NFL history. Hall of Famer Jerry Rice had 15 games with 10-plus catches for 100-plus yards.
Hit and miss?
Did Chicago's defense intimidate the Cowboys' receivers nfl jerseys
Sunday?
The Bears insisted that was the case. After their 27-20 win at Cowboys Stadium, they pointed to free safety Chris Harris' crunching hit on Roy Williams in the second quarter as a decisive moment.
"After that, they were looking up," cornerback D.J Moore said. "They didn't even want to catch the ball."
Said linebacker Lance Briggs: "That's the tone we want to set out there. {ellipsis} On some plays, you can see that came into play. It affected some of the catches that could have been drive-extenders."
The Cowboys disagreed.
Williams did hang onto the ball for a 19-yard catch. He sprang to his feet and showed no ill effects from the hit.
"Nobody intimidates me going across the middle," Williams said. "I'll catch the ball, pop up and throw it down in your face. Then I'll go to the sideline and rest a little bit."
There were various drops and off-line passes among New Orleans Saints jersey
Tony Romo 17 incompletions. Coach Wade Phillips attributed that to timing problems. He let the Bears' braggadocio pass.
"You can say that when you win," Phillips said.
Gerry Fraley
Remember when
It has been nine years since the Cowboys opened the season 0-2.
There's a chance you blocked that season out of your memory. We're here to shine the light.
A 32-21 loss to San Diego dropped the Cowboys to 0-2 in 2001. The starting quarterback in that game was Anthony Wright. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes with three interceptions, which explains why he wasn't the starting quarterback much longer.
Wright, Clint Stoerner, Ryan Leaf and Quincy Carter all started at quarterback for the Cowboys that season. The changes coach Wade Phillips is talking about this time around won't be at quarterback.
The head coach then was Dave Campo, the starting running back was Emmitt Smith and the leading receiver was Rocket Ismail.
That 0-2 start was a hint of what was to come. The Cowboys San Francisco 49ers jersey
dropped their first four before winning at Washington in October. They lost eight of their first 10 before a late rally allowed them to finish at 5-11.
Maybe that will make Cowboys fans feel a little better about this team's 0-2 start.

Manny joins Oz cast; Yankees 2 Sox 1; Reports say Dodgers will let Ramirez leave

Cowboys jersey
Manny Ramirez could be White Sox property today in a straight waiver claim, but there also was a possibility that a trade between the Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers still could be worked out.
If no deal is agreed upon, the Sox would pick up Ramirez's football jersey
remaining salary without giving the Dodgers a prospect in return. Sox general manager Ken Williams refused to comment on the situation late Sunday night.
Reports in Los Angeles and from MLB.com said the Dodgers had decided to let Ramirez leave in a straight waiver deal hours after he was ejected from the team's 10-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies in the sixth inning after he pinch-hit with the bases loaded. Ramirez was thrown out after arguing one pitch. It was the fourth consecutive game in which he was left out of the starting lineup by Joe Torre.
The Sox were awarded the waiver claim on Ramirez, 38, on Friday. The Dodgers had Chicago Bears jersey
until Tuesday to work out a trade with the Sox, pull Ramirez off waivers or let him and the $4 million owed to him go to the Sox in a straight claim. Reports from Los Angeles said the third option was the Dodgers' choice.
The teams had been talking since Friday. The Sox reportedly were offering to pick up about half of Ramirez's remaining salary, but the Dodgers were seeking more.
Ramirez has been on the disabled list three times this season, returning Tuesday from his latest stint for a strained calf.
He had a no-trade clause but had become only a bench player, indicating he would OK a move to an American League team in hopes of getting a contract extension or a chance to play as a designated hitter.
The Sox were not willing to give an extension for next season but now may have Ramirez New Orleans Saints jersey
to use as a DH.
If he joins the team today, he will debut for the Sox in Cleveland, where he played his first eight seasons. He had been with the Dodgers since July 31, 2008, but appeared in only 66 games this season, hitting .311 with eight homers and 40 RBI.

They Certainly Look Distracted;Phillies Need To Rediscover Their Sense Of Timing, And Very Soon

Cowboys jersey
PHILADELPHIA - It was just a month ago that Raul Ibanez stood in front of his locker and told a visitor, hey, distractions be damned.
"We know what we're here for," the Phillies left fielder nfl jerseys
said. "And it doesn't matter if it's hot, cold, raining... We've got to go out and play and get it done."
That was in the aftermath of game No. 97, and the Phils had just spent the afternoon pounding the hottest pitcher in baseball, Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez, sending him to the showers in the third inning of an eventual 10-2 romp. The NL champs' locker room was a heady place, and the stated feeling among many of the club's key veterans was that they knew what was expected of them entering the season's stretch run.
"The bottom line," shortstop Jimmy Rollins said, "is playing winning baseball."
Regardless, it might have been added, of the circumstances.
Fast forward to Game No. 127, Thursday's sun-soaked 5-1 loss to Houston in the finale of a startling four-game sweep that prevented Charlie Manuel's outfit from gaining ground on Atlanta in the East and on San Francisco and St. Louis in the wild-card chase, and the bottom line remains the same. The circumstances surrounding it, however, have changed.
Rather dramatically.
The Phils' big bats have grown silent as a snowfall. Thursday's loss marked the seventh time in eight games Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Co. have produced two runs or less. Not surprisingly, the Phillies are 2-6 in that stretch.
"If you only score one or two runs," Manuel reasoned, "you're not going to win too many games."
This time it was Saints jersey
Astros southpaw Wandy Rodriguez holding the Big Boppers hitless through four innings while his mates roughed up Kyle Kendrick. Look up and down the Phils' lineup and the names are the same. But as August melts into September, this squad barely resembles the swaggering bunch that shouldered its way into the South Bronx last fall for a World Series showdown with the Yankees.
It's all a bit puzzling.
"I don't know what to say," Manuel said with some embarrassment.
Neither, it seemed, did Kendrick.
"It's a tough game," he said in words barely above a whisper, "a humbling game."
Yeah, it's late August and Utley and Howard are rusty and trying to get into a groove at the plate after time on the DL. And yes, the Phils have endured a run of injuries so severe their Opening Day starting eight has appeared in the same lineup just six times this summer.
Call it a big departure from 2009 when they were the healthiest team in baseball. Considering what has happened this season, it would seem the law of averages has caught up with them. And maybe it has. But it's also true that this squad has struggled mightily between the white lines as well.
Witness its .206 team batting average in its last seven games prior to Thursday. Witness Werth, undoubtedly feeling pressure to produce in his contract year, batting .157 with runners in scoring position, the worst mark in the majors.
Witness the top half of the lineup -Rollins, Utley, Howard, Placido Polanco and Werth - going a combined 2-for-19 Thursday. Finally, witness Ben Francisco on Wednesday night being picked off third to end the seventh inning in an eventual 3-2 defeat.
For a team that just a month ago was declaring all distractions be damned, the Phillies - even with their season hanging in the balance - seem quite easily distracted.
"It's a sign of not being focused," Manuel stated, "not being in the game."
He paused, and his face reddened with anger.
"Saw a helluva lot of it (in this Houston series)," he said.
"It shouldn't happen," Rollins acknowledged, "but it does... Good thing is, San Diego Chargers jersey
we've been here (in the playoff race) before."
All of which makes their current funk even more confusing.
Manuel, for his part, sounded certain of one thing.
"If we're going to go where we want to go," he remarked, "we better get out of it."

Bitter up? No, jilted Trammell's 'fine'

Cowboys jersey
A day after getting the disappointing news that he's already out of the running for the Cubs' managerial job, bench coach Alan Trammell was back to work as usual and plans to stick with that approach through the final day of the season.
''I'm fine, I'm fine,'' he said Monday after general manager Jim nfl jersey
Hendry assigned third-base coach Mike Quade managerial duties the rest of the season, in part because Hendry decided in recent weeks that Trammell won't be a candidate for the permanent job. ''Believe me, I'm OK.
''I think there's more surprise from other people. But I'm fine. I'm appreciative of [Hendry] being upfront right from the get-go. And I will continue to do what I do. I'm here to do the best job I can, and that'll never change, if I'm here or anywhere else. That's just how I am.''
A close friendship between Trammell and Quade helps smooth a potentially awkward working relationship in the wake of Lou Piniella's sudden announcement Sunday that his retirement would start immediately.
''I've been with [Quade] now for four years, and it's a good friendship, and that would be one of the reasons why it's not even an issue,'' said Trammell, who managed seven games in the last month when Piniella took leaves for family issues. ''I'm pulling for him. We're in it together, believe me.''
Quade agreed.
''[Trammell's] one of the best people I've ever met in life -- to heck with the game,'' Quade said. ''We're very good friends. If I had any concerns at all about any of this, that would have been my No. 1. But he's not the guy you have to worry about.''
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
Thirty years to the day that Bob Dernier was told he had earned his first big-league call-up as a player, the Cubs' minor-league outfield and baserunning coordinator was promoted to the big-league staff to help cover in Piniella's absence.
With first-base coach Ivan DeJesus taking Quade's former third-base spot, Dernier Bills jersey
took over at first Monday night.
SILVA UPDATE
Carlos Silva, who hasn't pitched since leaving his Aug. 1 start in an ambulance because of heart arrhythmia, is scheduled to throw one more side session today before starting a minor-league rehabilitation assignment -- probably Thursday.
Pitching coach Larry Rothschild wants to oversee the first rehab outing, and the Cubs have a day off Thursday before continuing their trip in Cincinnati.
Silva is expected to need at least two rehab starts before being activated from the disabled list.
NOTES
The Nationals held a pregame tribute to Piniella, who played briefly in the expansion Washington Senators system, complete with video history of his playing and managerial careers and a framed picture of Piniella wearing a Senators cap -- which was to be presented to Piniella on the field. Except, of course, he wasn't there.
- The Cubs activated catcher Geovany Soto from the DL and recalled first baseman Micah Hoffpauir from Class AAA Iowa. They made room by optioning catcher Wellington Castillo and outfielder Sam Fuld to Iowa.
- Marlon Byrd left the game Monday after being hit on 49ers jersey
the right hand by a pitch in the third inning. X-rays were negative. He'll be evaluated again today.

Neither Beltran nor Wright has fared well against the Braves

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The Atlanta Braves are hoping to enter a showdown series with some momentum. Derek Lowe(notes) is hoping they can provide him some support unlike his previous outings this year against the New York Mets.
The Braves go for the three-game sweep at Citi Field as football jersey
they try to beat the Mets for the first time in four tries with Lowe on the mound Sunday.
Atlanta (85-64) started this critical nine-game trip with two wins to improve to 10-7 against New York (74-75) this year after losing the first four meetings. The Braves have a slim lead for the wild card, and begin a three-game set Monday against NL East leader Philadelphia.
Lowe (13-12, 4.22 ERA) is 0-2 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts versus the Mets this season. The Braves lost all three games while giving him a total of four runs of support.
Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran(notes) is hitting .156 (5 for 32) against Lowe. David Wright(notes) is 8 for 25 in his career, but just 1 for 9 this year against the right-hander.
Neither Beltran nor Wright has fared well against the Braves. Beltran is 0 for 8 in this series, and 5 for 31 against Atlanta this year while Wright is 0 for 7 in the series, and 6 for 60 with 14 strikeouts in the season series.
In a performance Lowe called “about the best game I’ve pitched in a long time,” Steelers jersey
he struck out a career-high 12 and yielded six hits over eight innings in a 4-0 win over Washington on Monday.
The Braves will have a tough assignment against R.A. Dickey(notes) (11-6, 2.80), who’s 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA in nine home starts.
Atlanta is the only team to beat Dickey in New York this year, as he gave up four runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 4-2 loss July 9. He also yielded two runs over six innings and did not get a decision in a 3-2 win Aug. 3 when he opposed Lowe.
Braves leadoff hitter Omar Infante(notes) is in a 2-for-15 slump, but 5 for 8 this year against Dickey.
The knuckleballer pitched his second complete game Tuesday in a 9-1 rout of Pittsburgh, allowing five hits.
“He has proven that he can get in and out of trouble at any time,” manager Jerry Manuel told the Mets’ official website. “And he has proven that he can win at this level.”
Nate McLouth(notes) homered and drove in two runs and Alex Gonzalez(notes) added two RBIs in Saturday’s 4-2 victory for Atlanta. McLouth is 11 for 33 (.333) with seven extra-base hits and 10 RBIs since he was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Aug. 31.
“I can’t say enough about Nate. We’ve been waiting for him to do this for a while. It looks like he’s coming around at the right time,” manager Bobby Cox said.
Tim Hudson(notes) earned his 16th win, and Billy Wagner(notes) struck out the Vikings jersey
side in the ninth for his 35th save.
Wagner has allowed one run in nine innings against the Mets this year, converting all five save chances against his former team.

Lee pitches Rangers past Mariners 6-1

Dallas Cowboys jersey
SEATTLE(AP)—Cliff Lee(notes) relished beating his former teammates.
Lee shut down the Mariners for eight innings in his first start in Seattle since a July trade, leading the first-place Texas Rangers to a 6-1 victory Saturday night.
“This is the first time I’ve got to play against a team that I played nfl jerseys
for previously,” Lee said. “Anytime you get a chance to pitch against a team that you played for you obviously want to do well.
“I want to pitch well every time. But when it’s against a team you played for there’s a little extra incentive,” he added. “
Lee (12-8) allowed six hits and struck out eight for his second consecutive win after three losses and a no decision. Lee improved to 4-5 with the Rangers as they close in on their first postseason berth since 1999.
“To have Cliff pitch the way he did tonight, that’s huge,” Texas right fielder Jeff Francoeur(notes) said. “At the end of the day, he’s that guy that’s going to go toe to toe with a couple of the other No. 1’s when we continue to get closer to clinching the playoffs. When we get to October that’s what we need is the type of performance he had tonight.
“Not to put too much pressure on him. But he did it last year (for Philadelphia) and he’s used to that,” Francoeur said.
Bengie Molina(notes) had three hits and two RBIs and Francoeur hit a two-run double to lead the AL West-leading Rangers.
The Rangers acquired Lee and reliever Mark Lowe(notes) July 9 from the San Francisco 49ers jersey
Mariners for first base prospect Justin Smoak(notes) and three minor leaguers.
Lee improved to 10-1 in 13 career starts against the Mariners. He has 25 strikeouts and one walk (on Saturday) in his last five appearances against Seattle.
Seattle’s Franklin Gutierrez(notes) hit a solo homer in the seventh.
The Mariners had runners on second and third with no outs in the fifth after Smoak singled and Josh Bard(notes) doubled. But Lee retired the next three batters with a strikeout, popup and foul flyout to preserve a 3-0 lead.
“He comes right at you,” Seattle manager Daren Brown said about Lee. “You know he is going to throw strikes. You know he is going to be around the plate. That makes him the guy that he is. Anytime he is on the other side, you know you’ve got a tough game in front of you.”
Smoak, who was called up Saturday from Triple-A Tacoma, started at first and went 1 for 3 against Lee with a single.
Jason Vargas(notes) (9-11) took his sixth straight loss. He allowed nine hits and five runs in six innings.
Lee stopped Seattle a game after Felix Hernandez(notes) took a no-hitter into the eighth and beat the Rangers 2-1 on Friday night.
Lee went 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts for Seattle after being picked up in an offseason trade with Philadelphia. Lee is a free agent after this season.
NOTES: Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) said before the game that he still feels pain in his bruised ribs even after receiving two cortisone shots on Wednesday. He said in a best-case scenario he would return to play for a week of the regular season. “At the moment, I don’t see that happening,” he said. Buffalo Bills jersey
Hamilton added he will know more Monday about what he might do next to treat the injury sustained Sept. 4 when he ran into an outfield wall in Minnesota. … Ichiro Suzuki(notes) had an infield single in the first to give him 3,500 in his pro career, including 2,222 in the majors and 1,278 in Japan. He added another infield single in the eighth.

FIFA inspectors tour Qatar ahead of World Cup vote

Indianapolis Colts jersey
DOHA, Qatar (AP)—FIFA inspectors had their first look Wednesday at Qatar’s plans for a high-speed rail network, a 50 million passenger airport and a satellite city being built that will be home to 200,000 people and scores of hotels as it makes its pitch to host the 2022 World Cup.
The infrastructure projects are part of cheap nfl jerseys
$42.9 billion in upgrades the tiny Middle East nation is planning whether or not the country wins the World Cup. Many projects, though, are being sped up to ensure they are ready in time for the tournament and are being promoted to show that the nation—which some have derided as too small to host the event—will have the necessary transit links and adequate accommodations for the hundreds of thousands of visitors.
“We’re moving regardless,” said Yasir Abdulla al-Jamal, who has helped put together the bid. “We are a small country but we have a lot of dreams, a lot of ambitions. We want to change the perception of FIFA and the world that the World Cup can’t be held in a small country.”
FIFA inspectors are in Qatar through Thursday, and on Tuesday they toured a specially designed stadium with a solar-powered cooling system which would be installed in the 12 proposed stadiums. The cooling system is designed to keep temperatures at 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees F) on the field and in the stands, far cooler than the 41 C (106 F) average in June, July and August. It was forecast to reach 44 C (112 F) on Wednesday, according to the BBC.
Qatar’s cooling system is designed to continuously pump cool air into the venues, and Qatar bid committee CEO Hassan al-Thawadi has said the technology can be expanded in the coming years to ensure that fan zones and training sites are also kept cool. Al-Thawadi also promised the Indianapolis Colts jersey
system would be carbon neutral because it depends on renewable energy sources.
Inspectors late Tuesday also watched a local football match at a stadium with an older cooling system which is powered by the country’s electricity grid. Temperatures at the 16,000-seat, Al Saad stadium got down to as low as 19 C (66 F) during the match, according to organizers.
The inspection team includes six delegates, led by Chile Football Federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls. Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the organizing committee for the World Cup in South Africa, is also part of the delegation.
Qatar is the final stop on a tour of nine countries which are bidding to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cups. FIFA’s 24-member executive committee will choose the winners and they will be announced on Dec. 2.
Inspectors did not comment Wednesday and have said very little since the visit began. They also met with government officials and were given a presentation on a massive city that is planned from scratch several kilometers outside the capital Doha. Complete with four skyscrapers, a 1,400-boat marina, 37 residential towers, shopping malls and one of the World Cup stadiums, the Lusail project stretches for 8 kilometers (5 miles) and is expected to be completed no later than 2020. If Qatar is awarded the hosting rights, the city would be home to many of the World Cup visitors.
The high-speed rail network, which reaches speeds of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
350 kilometers (217 miles) per hour, means that visitors from Bahrain could reach Qatar in an hour.
Inspectors also met with Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani, the minister of Internal Affairs, to discuss security arrangements in Qatar. They also discussed plans for a media venue that would be based in Lusail and is where most of the broadcasters would be based.

Asian champions Steelers slump in Iran

Indianapolis Colts jersey
DUBAI (AFP) - Title-holders Pohang Steelers slumped to a 2-1 quarter-final first leg defeat against Iranian side Zobahan on Wednesday to leave the defence of their AFC Champions League crown in the balance.
Mahdi Rajabzadeh's 75th-minute penalty, awarded after Jung Hong-youn had fouled Igor Castro in the area, proved the difference between the two sides.
Castro had given the Iranian league leaders the football jersey
lead after 18 minutes when a Rajabzadeh corner was headed into his path by Mohammad Ghazi. The Brazilian turned neatly and shot past goalkeeper Shin Hwa-yung.
His compatriot Mota equalised in the 55th minute when a right-wing cross from Kim Jae-sung was not cleared properly by Farshid Talebi.
His header fell to Mota, who shot into the bottom corner.
Earlier, Seongnam Ilhwa continued their impressive recent form to crush fellow South Koreans Suwon Bluewings 4-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final.
But while Seongnam made the most of home advantage, another K-League team, Jeonbuk Motors, failed to fire and now have a huge mountain to climb after losing 2-0 to Saudi giants Al Shabab.
Seongnam's Macedonian target man Dzenan Radoncic opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Yeom Ki-Hun equalised for the visitors, who saw their nine-match unbeaten streak ended over the weekend in the domestic league.
Seven-time Korean champions Seongnam have a formidable front line and former Colombia international Mauricio Molina made it 2-1 just past the half-hour mark.
With former player Shin Tae-Yong now coaching the team and directing operations from the Minnesota Vikings jersey
touchline, they increased their advantage in the second half with Radoncic finding the net again in the 67th minute.
Song Ho-Young grabbed a fourth six minutes from time to leave Suwon with a mountain to climb in the return leg next week.
Jeonbuk Motors, the 2006 champions, also have their work cut out after Al Shabab got the better of them with second-half strikes from Fahad Hamad and recently-arrived Uruguay forward Juan Manuel Olivera.
It was an unexpected result for Al Shabab, who have made a poor start in the Saudi League and lie a lowly ninth after managing only one win from their opening four games.
Al Hilal made it a night to remember for Saudi football when they defeated Al Gharafa from neighbouring Qatar 3-0 with goals from Mohammed Al-Shalhoub, Ahmed Al-Fraidi and substitute Waleed Algizani.
Reports this week suggested that Sven Goran Eriksson could become their new boss when Eric Gerets leaves to coach Morocco's national side.
Gerets is set to depart the Saudi powerhouse once their Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Champions League campaign ends.
The second legs are played on September 22, with the final at Tokyo's National Stadium on November 13.

Jackson steps in for Grant, Packers thin at RB

Colts jersey
Brandon Jackson doesn't have an established track record of consistent production like the player he's replacing. Still, the Green Bay Packers are confident he can carry the load in the wake of Ryan Grant's season-ending ankle injury.
And if Jackson can't stay healthy, things really get dicey.
The Packers kept only two true halfbacks, Grant and Jackson, on nfl jerseys
their 53-man roster coming out of training camp. With Grant gone, Jackson's main backup and the Packers' primary third-down option for the time being is John Kuhn - a fullback who has shown enough ability with the ball in his hands to become an insurance policy.
''It's one of those things where you work on it in the preseason as an emergency-type situation, and now it's an emergency,'' Kuhn said. ''We need to go out and perform.''
Going into Sunday's home opener against Buffalo, some might see a team with Super Bowl aspirations suddenly being one injury away from having a fullback as their No. 1 running back - especially after Jackson has missed time with injuries in each of the past three season.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy considers Kuhn more than just a fullback. McCarthy says Kuhn, who was a record-setting rusher at Division II Shippensburg University, has plenty of experience in the Packers' one-back offensive sets.
''The one-back position carries fullback and halfback responsibilities, and we're prepared to go forward,'' McCarthy said. ''So I don't look at us as one play away from being locked into playing with a different position at the (halfback) position of our offense.''
Backup plans aside, Jackson is confident he can carry the load. A second-round pick out of Nebraska in 2007, Jackson has become an effective third-down back.
''They've always been telling me you're one play away, and just be ready,'' Jackson said. ''Obviously I've been doing that for three years now, a long time coming. And it's here, and I'm taking advantage of it.''
The Packers did add depth this week, signing relative unknown Dimitri Nance off the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad. Nance, who went undrafted out of Arizona State, describes himself as an inside runner with an ability to break tackles and catch passes.
''He is actually someone that we were looking at through training camp,'' McCarthy said. ''I just had a chance to watch him today. Very explosive, instinctive, definitely has a very strong, quick lower half. Everything we saw on film was validated today. He is a young player and I think he will be a good fit for us.''
And there has been speculation that it might make sense for the Packers to trade for a running back - including a potential move for a Indianapolis Colts jersey
player they'll face Sunday, the Bills' Marshawn Lynch.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played with Lynch at Cal in college, would be all for it. Asked what he would say if the Packers' front office asked him about Lynch, Rodgers responded, ''bring him on.''
''I think when you give a guy a change of scenery, and a guy like that who might feel like he has something to prove, and surround him with two guys, (linebacker Desmond) Bishop and myself, who have played with him, I think that can only help him feel comfortable and see a lot of production,'' Rodgers said.
But Packers general manager Ted Thompson isn't known for making splashy moves out of desperation and doesn't like to part with future draft picks. So for now, it's Jackson, Kuhn and Nance.
Grant was not present when the team's locker room was open to reporters Wednesday. On his Twitter account, Grant said he felt like he had a chance of returning later in the season but understood that the Packers needed the roster spot.
''You can sit here and say he would have been ready for the playoffs based on someone else that went through it in the past,'' McCarthy said. ''You look at past injuries, but it's all about the individual. It's about the doctor's opinion of the specific injury.''
And while Grant had been remarkably durable for the Packers until now, the same can't be said for Jackson.
He missed four straight games with a shin injury in 2007, two games in 2008 with a wrist injury and the first four games of last season because of an ankle injury.
Beyond that, Jackson hasn't carried the ball Dallas Cowboys jersey
more than 75 times in a season - so how much will he have left in December, when Grant seemed to be at his best?
''This offseason I trained my body to handle the load and obviously it's here right now,'' Jackson said. ''So we'll see.''

Houshmandzadeh hopes for happy return to Cincy

Colts jersey
T.J. Houshmandzadeh doesn't know how he will feel when he takes the field in Cincinnati or how he will be received by Bengals' fans.
The only thing he's sure of is that it's going to be a blast seeing some of nfl jersey
his friends from the old days when the team was known as ''The Bungles.''
Houshmandzadeh began his NFL career with the Bengals and played eight seasons in Cincinnati before signing as a free agent with Seattle last year. After being cut by the Seahawks earlier this month, the wide receiver was scooped up by the Ravens - who face the Bengals on Sunday in an AFC North showdown.
It will be Houshmandzadeh's first game in Cincinnati since he left in a huff as a free agent following the 2008 season.
''I'm kind of eager to see how the (visiting) locker room looks, whether it's nice or different,'' Houshmandzadeh said Wednesday. ''I don't know how I'm going to feel. Emotions kind of come to you however they may. You can't really control them. But it will very different, to say the least.''
The Bengals can't wait to see him - as long as he stays out of the end zone.
''T.J. had a lot to do with the success of things here,'' coach Marvin Lewis said. ''He's obviously well-loved here. He's a great young man. He's one of the guys who also helped my knucklehead receiver I got here to do better.''
That ''knucklehead receiver'' would be Chad Ochocinco, who was known as Chad Johnson when he was Houshmandzadeh's teammate.
''It's been a long time since I've actually been able to see Housh in person. I'm looking forward to catching up with him,'' Ochocinco said.
Houshmandzadeh was drafted by the Bengals in the seventh round of the 2001 draft. He battled injuries early in his career, but remained in the mix at receiver because Lewis was convinced Houshmandzadeh could excel in the NFL.
Lewis was right, and Houshmandzadeh will forever be grateful for his coach's faith.
''Had I been on another team I probably would have Minnesota Vikings jersey
been released and be at home right now, doing Lord knows what,'' Houshmandzadeh said. ''Marvin stuck by me when I was hurt.''
Despite starting only six games in his first three NFL seasons, Houshmandzadeh scored 37 touchdowns and had two 1,000-yard receiving seasons with Cincinnati. For that reason, he hopes Bengals fans will treat him as an old friend.
''Expect the worst, hope for the best,'' he said. ''Maybe they have a little more (empathy) toward me because I was a guy that started at the bottom.''
When Houshmandzadeh's contract expired, he had every intention of coming back. But the Bengals were slow to begin serious negotiations, giving him the impression they weren't as interested in signing him as he was in returning.
''I wanted to stay, but I think the way they went about it initially put it in my mind I don't need to stay,'' Houshmandzadeh recalled. ''It was like, you want to do something but you know it isn't the best thing for you. Kind of like you have a woman and you really like her, but she really doesn't like you and you don't know when to leave her alone.''
Houshmandzadeh finally left for Seattle, where he endured one unfulfilling season. Now he's with the Ravens, who are intent upon unseating the Bengals as division champions.
In his Baltimore debut Monday night, Houshmandzadeh caught one pass for 27 yards against the New York Jets after scrambling to absorb a new playbook.
''Monday was fun. It was kind of whirlwind,'' he said. ''When I was studying the playbook, I was like, 'There's no way I'm going to play.' Because it was like Spanish. The Rosetta Stone. As the week progressed, though, I kind of got a grasp of it.''
He should receive more playing time this weekend, but there are no guarantees.
''I wouldn't say I expect more,'' he said. ''I want more.''
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer expects that to Dallas Cowboys jersey
happen sooner than later.
''They're going to end up using him a lot and he'll be a tremendous player in that scheme because they know how good he is,'' Palmer said. ''They've played against him so many times and he's beat them so many times that they know things he's good at already. They'll get him involved quick.''

Falcons offense still struggling to find its mojo

Colts jersey
The Atlanta Falcons know they have all the necessary ingredients: The hotshot young quarterback, the go-to running back, a receiver who puts up big numbers and a Hall of Famer-to-be at tight end.
So far, it hasn't added up to much.
The Falcons' first-team offense produced one touchdown in 13 possessions nfl throwback jerseys
during the preseason. It went 0-for-13 in the season opener against Pittsburgh, a 15-9 overtime loss that puts plenty of pressure on Atlanta (0-1) heading into Sunday's home opener against Arizona (1-0).
Not exactly what was expected from a team that has Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez.
''Looking at the film, it seems like we're executing. Then, for whatever reason, we come up a yard short or two yards short,'' Gonzalez said Wednesday. ''I think we can be a really good offense. We have the players. We just have to go out there and execute when the play is called and move the ball down the field.
''And,'' he quickly added, ''we will.''
The Falcons certainly struggled against the Steelers, missing a prime chance to pull off a road victory against a team going with third-string quarterback Dennis Dixon because of Ben Roethlisberger's suspension and an injury to backup Bryon Leftwich.
Atlanta was held to 58 yards on the ground - a paltry 42 of them turned in by Turner, who averaged 2.2 yards on his 19 carries - and Ryan threw a potentially devastating interception near the end of the regulation. Then, after managing just one first down on the first possession of overtime, and getting knocked back by a holding penalty on left tackle Sam Baker, the Falcons were forced to punt it away.
Pittsburgh won it on the very next play: Rashard Mendehall's 50-yard touchdown run.
Turner spent most of the day running into a pile of players - both teammates and defenders. Operating out of a 3-4 scheme, the Steelers were able to bog down the Falcons' big men, not necessarily penetrating into the backfield but keeping things clogged up at the line.
The Cardinals, who also use the 3-4, have undoubtedly watched the film and will try a similar tact, which means the onus will be on the Falcons line to do a better job of creating running lanes, and on Turner to take advantage of them as he did two years ago when he was the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
NFL's second-leading rusher.
''That was mostly on us, if you want to know the truth,'' Turner said. ''Pittsburgh is a great defense. They did a great job of doing what they're supposed to do. But if we cleaned up some things and did some things right, like we had been working on all week, we would've had a better chance.''
Turner was especially anemic when running the ball on first down. He carried it 11 times in those situations and totaled just 22 yards. His longest first-down run was 6 yards. Three times, he was thrown down behind the line of scrimmage, leaving the offense stuck in a second-and-long rut.
''Obviously, running the ball is important in this league, and that's certainly an area where we need to improve,'' Ryan said. ''But we've got a lot of things we need to improve on.''
Including the play at quarterback. Ryan burst onto the scene in 2008 with a brilliant rookie season, leading the Falcons to an unexpected playoff berth. But last year, hampered by injuries to himself and those around him, his numbers dropped off and Atlanta missed out on the postseason.
Ryan is off another rough start in 2010, making his biggest miscue late in regulation - a play that should have cost the Falcons the game before they even got to overtime.
Troy Polamalu suckered the quarterback into throwing a dangerous sideline route for Roddy White. Reading the play all the way, the Pro Bowl safety came out of nowhere to make the interception before falling out of bounds. Jeff Reed missed a 40-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining, but it didn't matter.
Gonzalez has no doubt that Atlanta will be one of the league's top offensive teams before the season is done.
''I'm not going to say last week was a fluke. At the same time, we know he Dallas Cowboys jersey
can play better,'' he said. ''Our confidence is not going to be swayed this week. We're going in there knowing we have a pretty good offense and can move the ball up and down the field. Hopefully, we'll get the job done.''

What rust? Matthews has big day in Packers opener

Dallas Cowboys jersey

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—If that was what Clay Matthews(notes) looks like when he’s just shaking off the rust, the rest of the quarterbacks on the Green Bay Packers’ schedule might be getting a little jittery.
After missing most of training camp and all four preseason nfl jerseys
games with a hamstring injury, Matthews made several critical plays to help the Packers win their regular-season opener at Philadelphia on Sunday.
A hit by Matthews ended up knocking Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb(notes) out of the game. Then Matthews had a big hand in making sure Kolb’s backup, Michael Vick(notes), wasn’t able to convert a critical fourth-and-1 play in the fourth quarter.
Still, Matthews left the game annoyed at himself about an interception he dropped.
“Trust me, that won’t happen again,” Matthews said after Sunday’s game. “I’d give up a few sacks for that.”
Matthews’ two biggest plays of the game—a sack and the fourth-down stop— came on the Eagles’ decisive final offensive series in the fourth quarter, a sign that his conditioning held up even with very little activity in training camp.
“Clay’s a well-conditioned athlete,” defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. “He’s had the hamstring issue in both training camps, but probably a little bit of that is he does condition to the point where he really taxes his body because he pushes his body. He was playing, I think, at the same level at the end there. Your big players have to rise to the occasion.”
Matthews had two sacks, seven tackles and a forced fumble against the Eagles, showing no sign that he spent most of training camp watching the rest of the team practice.
Well, almost no sign: he had just about enough of Vick’s scrambling.
“I was gassed,” Matthews said. “Anytime you have to chase Vick around, you’re going to be tired. With four weeks off in camp and limited practice, it’s going to be tough. But I made it through the game, I’ll get some much-needed rest and take it into the Buffalo week.”
Matthews said a few of his teammates ribbed him after his second-quarter hit ended up knocking Kolb out of the game with a concussion—because it meant they’d spend the rest of the day chasing Vick.
“Vick’s an exceptional athlete,” Matthews said. “He was Dallas Cowboys jersey
moving around out there, making plays. I’ve been saying, the real story is, who’s going to start for Philly next week?”
But Matthews got the best of Vick when it mattered the most.
With Philadelphia trailing by seven points and facing second-and-10 near midfield, Matthews sacked Vick for a 3-yard loss—succeeding where several of his teammates whiffed earlier in the half.
Vick completed a 12-yard pass on the next play, leaving them with fourth-and-1 on the Packers’ 42-yard line.
The Eagles ran a sneak with Vick, Matthews shook off a blocking attempt by tight end Brent Celek(notes), then got an arm around Vick as he tried to break through the line. He didn’t make the first down.
“We expected them to run a quarterback sneak, and we prepare for this,” Matthews said. “We go over everything from the last play to fourth-and-1 situations. Fortunately I was able to slip inside that tight end and knock a few guys off and create some mayhem back there. The game’s on the line, you’ve got to make big plays. And fortunately me and some of the other guys can get him down and get off the field.”
The pass rush was a significant question mark for the Packers going into this season. But they had five sacks on Sunday, getting pressure as Matthews frequently switched sides and ran stunts with defensive linemen.
“I was rushing a little bit from the right, a little bit from the left, saw a few eyes go, ‘What’s going on out here?”’ Matthews said. “I don’t know. I got a couple guard blocks on me that caught me right in the jaw, in the face a couple times, that’s what I’ve come to expect. I think overall we got some good pressure on them.”
The Packers escaped with a 27-20 victory in a tough Minnesota Vikings jersey
road game, providing a boost to what already was a confident team.
“We know what we have, we know what we can do,” Matthews said. “It’s all about putting it together now.”

NFL-Stadium renovations complete, focus now on rebuilding Chiefs

Dallas Cowboys jersey

KANSAS CITY, Missouri, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Renovations to the New Arrowhead Stadium have been completed and work on restoring the Kansas City Chiefs seems to be on schedule as well.
Back in the Monday Night Football (MNF) spotlight for the first time since 2004, Chiefs’ fans hope their team might again look as good as their remodelled stadium after they christened it with a shock 21-14 win over the San Diego Chargers.
The Chiefs used the MNF stage and a prime time television audience to cheap nfl jerseys
officially unveil the $375 million facelift and opening night featured plenty of fireworks.
But it was the Chiefs themselves, who provided the thrills with a string of explosive big plays, highlighted by an electrifying club record 94-yard punt return from rookie Dexter McCluster(notes).
While Arrowhead’s distinctive design remains intact, the stadium’s reputation as one of the NFL’s most hostile and intimidating venues has suffered along with the Chiefs’ recent results.
In 2005, Sports Illustrated named Arrowhead as the Indianapolis Colts jersey
“toughest place to play” but with just six wins at home in the last two seasons, a visit to Kansas City no longer struck the same fear into opponents.
“Our vision for the New Arrowhead was, ‘new body, same soul’,” said Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt. “We wanted to give our fans all the amenities of a brand-new, first class venue while preserving the iconic elements of the stadium.”
All 71,000 seats were occupied for the season opener and supporters in raucous form despite a driving rain storm that dampened the party mood.
“The fans tonight, what great energy out there,” Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said.
“This is how I visualized Arrowhead and it’s because of those people who were out there in some pretty difficult conditions and it didn’t look like too many were shying away from it.”
The planning and construction of the venue took six years, though Minnesota Vikings jersey
fans are hopeful that it will not take that long to turn the team into playoff contenders.
The team is rebuilding, bringing in Haley and general manager Scott Pioli last year. Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis, who helped turn the New England Patriots into a dynasty, are back together assuming their old jobs of defensive and offensive co-ordinators.

Good matchup looms between Suggs, Ferguson

Dallas Cowboys jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs(notes) and New York Jets offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson(notes) are two of the top young players at their respective positions.
And their matchup is regarded as one of the key encounters in tonight's football jersey
game at the new Meadowlands stadium.
Suggs is a tough pass rusher, and Ferguson is one of the more athletic pass blockers in the league.
Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison likes Suggs' chances.
"I take Terrell Suggs versus really anybody," Mattison said. "You know my feeling on that. I believe Terrell Suggs is one of the best in the game. He’s worked very hard on all parts of his game, so I’m looking forward to watching Terrell Suggs. And I’ll say the same thing next week and the next week and the next week.”
Suggs is coming off a career-low 4 1/2 sacks last Dallas Cowboys jersey
season.
He has dropped 20 pounds after reporting overweight last season when he played at roughly 283 pounds.
“I don’t know what it has to do with last year with Terrell Suggs because you’ve heard what I’ve said about that," Mattison said when asked if Suggs has something to prove. "I thought he had an outstanding year as far as playing the run. I think what Terrell Suggs has set out to do from the day he got here, with getting his weight down, being in tremendous shape, is to be the great football player he is in all phases of it.
"And he’s done it every day in practice. I’ve got to say that Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Terrell Suggs has come out all through camp, has not missed a beat, not missed a practice, not anything like that. He has really, really practiced like he should practice, and that’s why he’s going to get great rewards this year.”

around six weeks after he picked up the injury in England’s 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland on Tuesday but has now had to undergo surgery.
“Following a review by an ankle specialist, Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Jermain Defoe underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle yesterday evening (Thursday),” the Premier League club said in a statement on their website

Comment: Carlos Queiroz's Downfall Was Absurd, Yet Inevitable

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Carlos Queiroz's role as Portugal manager unceremoniously ended on Thursday, just two days after his side lost out 1-0 at Norway to take just one point from their first two Euro qualifiers. Yet Carlos himself could scarcely be held responsible for those results, given that he nfl jerseys
was unable to take charge of his team: he had been suspended by the local authorities. Thus in quite absurd fashion a manager was sacked after a poor result that he had little to do with.

That's all of a piece with Carlos' career. It's never been easy, and it's seldom felt quite right. In fact Queiroz's return to the national team bore an uncanny resemblance to the end of his first appointment: taking his hotseat only to be faced with an unimpressed, almost hostile support base. "Most Portuguese fans looked at his being chosen with suspicion, given that he had previously failed at the helm of the Seleccao - he could not guide the team to Euro 92 or the 1994 World Cup," says Portuguese football journalist and former Goal.com writer Luis Mira. "The appointment of Queiroz, a man still primarily known for his work with young players, did not gather many followers."

This point is key. Although Queiroz has been around the world in a coaching capacity, and of course served as assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, it is as a youth manager that he will be most fondly remembered. In fact Queiroz's one spell as a successful coach was in the late 80s and early 90s. As manager of the Portuguese youth teams he won the FIFA World Youth Championship twice, first in 1989 and then in 1991. Many of the young Portuguese of that so-called Golden Generation had been unable to play world football at a lower level: the U-16, later U-17 World Cup wasn't introduced until 1985, and the Selecao missed the first two biannual editions. (Queiroz coached Portugal at the third, also in 1989, making for a busy year. His fledglings lost in the semis to hosts Scotland.)

That Queiroz was able to take such a largely untried group to global success - not once, but twice - pays testament to his skills as both a tactician and a builder of teams. But there are two aspects to these victories - two circumstances - that were not to collide again for the rest of his career.

Stars Aligning

First of all he was blessed with talent all over the pitch. Luis Figo was coming through the ranks in time for the second tournament and it is his name that embodies his generation, but even in 1989 the likes of Joao Pinto, Fernando Couto, Paulo Sousa and an at-the-time massively rated full-back named Abel Silva were all among the best in their positions. This was only to repeat once in his career: at Real Madrid. But here he was a victim of the hubristic Galacticos program and unable to mix talent and tactics in the way that he'd grown up with. Instead it was to be all talent at all costs, with certain players to be treated as investments to be cherished rather than tools to be utilised. No wonder it didn't last. Secondly, a youth coach is seldom in the limelight. Press conferences at this level of Minnesota Vikings jersey
football are largely dutiful in presentation and muted in volume, sparsely populated by a few dozing hacks, rather than the standing-room-only affairs at the full World Cup. This lack of pressure from a media to which Carlos was perhaps honest to a fault would undoubtedly permit him to stay focused.

His weakest moments with United, in fact, were usually the product of a microphone, a camera, and his temper. Alex Ferguson's long-running spat with the BBC is well-known, and thus it fell frequently to Carlos to give United's contractually-bound interviews to the British state broadcaster. Here he'd often deviate from the script (assuming there was one) and court controversy. Nobody can get away with attacking referees when somebody might be listening - and in the Premier League, somebody is always listening. Conduct that might have flown at youth tournaments suddenly began to look reckless, even amateurish, under the glare of the flashbulbs and in front of the sponsors' logos.

Cometh The Hour

Again, his technical abilities were never in question, but against a backdrop like this his appointment in 2008 seems almost mystifying. In charge of Portugal for a second time, Queiroz had little to recommend him. It had been over five years since he last took charge of a team - his team - in a competitive match, deputising for the formidable Fergie notwithstanding. He faced a local media and fanbase that was, in Luis Mira's words, in thrall to none other than "Luis Felipe Scolari, who had helped Portugal to some of their best results in history." A terrible run of form in his opening games saw this confrontational relationship deteriorate further, and key positions lacking talent - most notably the centre-forward spot - meant that he didn't have the talent pool to win over the fans.

Of course results played their part, but ultimately it seemed to be Queiroz's mouth that saw his reign end. Or perhaps it's the other way around, his suspension for insulting the anti-doping agency proving to be the crime that the authorities needed to dispose with him quickly and relatively painlessly. Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Regardless, it was perhaps inevitable. Carlos was never the popular appointment, nor the right one. To call him a failure as a first-team manager is perhaps harsh, yet it has truth in it. Let that never, though, detract from the man's undoubted talents. Portugal may have gained for being able to start afresh, but football as a whole will be the poorer if Queiroz's coaching talents aren't brought to bear somewhere else, and soon.

Fit-again Ronaldo to start for Real against Osasuna

Dallas Cowboys jersey

MADRID, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will deploy Cristiano Ronaldo from the start of Saturday’s La Liga match at home to Osasuna after the Portuguese forward recovered from a bruised ankle more quickly than expected.
The forward sustained the nfl jersey
injury in Real’s 0-0 draw at Real Mallorca on the opening day of the season and missed Portugal’s European qualifiers at home to Cyprus and away to Norway.
“He’ll play,” Mourinho told a news conference on Friday after Ronaldo successfuly completed a training session at the club’s facility on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.
“He’s in good shape and because it’s a difficult match he’ll play from the start.”
Mourinho will be without midfielders Kaka (knee) and Fernando Indianapolis Colts jersey
Gago (knee) and defenders Raul Albiol (ankle) and Ezequiel Garay (knee), who are all injured.
Kaka, who has been plagued with injury and has failed to live up to expectations since joining Real from AC Milan for the start of the 2009-10 campaign, had surgery on his knee last month and is expected to be out for another three months.
The Brazil playmaker told Real’s website his recovery was progressing well.
“I have no pain in the knee,” he said. “It’s a month Dallas Cowboys jersey
now since the injury and everything is going well. I am doing many hours of physiotherapy and that’s helping me a lot.”

New York Jets

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Last season, the Jets went 9-7, coming just short in their division. They did win the wild card and did OK in the playoffs.
This offseason, the Jets made some big moves by football jerseys
getting Santonio Holmes, Antonio Cromartie, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Jason Taylor.
You might say these moves are good and because of these, the Jets will win more games, but I do not think so.
First off, Holmes has been suspended for the first four games of the season and because of that, his impact on the Jets will be less.
Cromartie was very good in 2007, getting 10 Minnesota Vikings jersey
picks and making the Pro Bowl, but since that season, he has five picks in the last two years! Also, Darrelle Revis is back so he will not have as much playing time.
Tomlinson might be one of the best RBs of all time. He has been great his whole career with the Chargers, but age has caught up with him recently. Last season, he only had 730 yards, marking his first season without 1,000 yards rushing.
Taylor is a 50-50 in my opinion. Last season, he Dallas Cowboys jersey
had seven sacks, which is usually pretty good, but for him that is not usual. He usually gets 10 or more sacks, so he will only do OK next season, in my opinion.

Quick Hit football video game gets NFL makeover

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

SEATTLE — Thursday marks the kickoff of the 2010 NFL season, and along with it, a renewed interest in fantasy leagues and video games that let Monday-morning quarterbacks feel as if they're part of the action.
The perennial champ of the genre, Electronic Arts Inc.'s nfl jerseys
"Madden," has already made its debut this year as a free Facebook application.
An underdog contender, Quick Hit Inc., has joined the fray with "Quick Hit NFL Football." It lets players pick an NFL team and coach it through the season.
Quick Hit's game came out in beta test form last October, but without the official NFL teams, logos, uniforms and other touches. By January it had racked up 1 million users; the company will only say players now number "in the millions."
Both "Quick Hit NFL Football," a standalone game played in a Web browser, and "Madden NFL Superstars," the Facebook game from EA, are part of a growing trend of online games that are free to play but sell extra, optional items for small amounts of Minnesota Vikings jersey
money.
Quick Hit's updated game brings color commentary from former longtime Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, plus the ability to pay a few bucks extra to snag famous players or playbook additions. There are only five current NFL players available to add to rosters, the most Quick Hit could include based on its licensing agreements. People can choose among more than 100 past "legends" to round out their teams.
For people willing to pay for a "pro" membership — $5.99 per month, $29.99 for six months or $47.99 for a year — Quick Hit's updated game also adds such perks as new "camera angles" to give the game a more three-dimensional feel. The free version only offers a bird's eye view of the field.
In addition to its browser-based game, Quick Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Hit said it's working on a Facebook version, which should be available sometime this year.

Rodgers will lead Packers to Super Bowl glory

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

The long NFL off-season is finally over and, while the past seven months have not lacked in terms of headlines and intrigue, I cannot wait for the real action to begin on the pitch.
It has been an off-season full of high-profile moves. Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Miami Dolphins, star quarterback Donovan McNabb joined the Washington Redskins after 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, and a whole host of cheap nfl jerseys
veteran stars inked deals with an ambitious New York Jets club gearing up for a Super Bowl run.
But, as has been the case for the previous three years, one man dominated the off-season news and all eyes were on future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre for much of the summer.
Given that Favre got severely beaten up in the NFC Championship Game at the end of January, underwent tricky ankle surgery in May and will turn 41 in October, Vikings fans could have been forgiven for thinking the man who threw for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2009 was not coming back. But Favre re-signed with the Vikings for a 20th season in the NFL and gives them undoubted playmaking class from the quarterback position.
Although Favre demands considerable attention, I don't consider him to be the best quarterback in the NFC North division. I would give that honour to the rising star who replaced Favre in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers.
I feel the 2010 season will see Rodgers put himself in the same class as the likes of Peyton Manning and Drew Brees - and I think the result will be a Super Bowl victory for the Green Bay Packers in February.
Rodgers, still only 26, has the arm strength to make every throw in the playbook, he takes care of the football and he rarely gets rattled under pressure.
The one knock on him during the first half of the 2009 campaign was that he held on to the ball for too long and took too many sacks. He wiped that problem from his game over the second half of last season and will receive a further confidence boost from the fact he will be playing behind a much-improved offensive line in 2010.
But it is in the skill positions that the Packers are most spoiled. In addition to Rodgers, they have outstanding receivers in Greg Jennings and Donald Driver, and a playmaking, athletic tight end in Jermichael Finley. Add in Ryan Grant, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards Indianapolis Colts jersey
and scored 11 touchdowns in 2009 and you can see why the Packers will easily put points on the board.
Defensively, the Packers ranked second in the NFL last term and return playmakers across the board in the form of cornerback Charles Woodson and linebackers Nick Barnett and Clay Matthews.
But with quarterback being such a pivotal position in the NFL, Rodgers is the key man and he looks extremely capable of guiding the Packers on a special run to the Super Bowl.
Rodgers' career passer rating of 97.2 ranks as the highest in NFL history, ahead of Hall of Fame greats such as Steve Young, Joe Montana and Dan Marino.
He now needs a Super Bowl crown to truly win the love and admiration of Packers fans who still think back fondly to the Favre era. And I think this could be the year he does just that, guiding the Packers to victory over the Indianapolis Colts or Baltimore Ravens in February.
As someone who has handled himself with class and dignity in the face of so many questions about Favre in recent years, Rodgers would fully deserve that kind of success.

Week one on BBC 5 live sports extra
We have a couple of mouth-watering contests to listen out for on BBC Radio this week, beginning in the early hours of Friday morning at 0030 BST with the NFC Championship Game re-match between the Vikings and the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
Greg Brady and Darren Fletcher will call the action live from the Superdome and I think Drew Brees and the Saints will have too much firepower for a Vikings side with question marks at receiver.
I'll take the Saints and their receivers every time, particularly with Brees firing the football around the field.
On Sunday from 2100 BST, Arlo White presents live coverage of the San Francisco 49ers' visit to the Seattle Seahawks. The hometown Seahawks are rebuilding under new head coach Pete Carroll but I think the 49ers will be too strong for them on this occasion.
Mike Singletary has introduced a feel-good vibe around the Dallas Cowboys jersey
Wembley-bound 49ers and they are favourites to take the NFC West this season. Alex Smith has some offensive weapons around him and the defence remains as good as ever.
It should be a fascinating opening weekend and an action-packed, exciting 2010 campaign.
