Unfair, selfish Al Davis ready to put final dagger in Raiders

Just last year, owner Al Davis vowed that he won't retire until he’s won at least two more Super Bowls. Here’s something I vow: The Raiders won’t even come close to one Super Bowl with Davis at the top.And here’s another: Davis will never fully retire, even after he’s gone. The decisions he makes now will haunt the next regime well beyond his own reign.Even when the 79-year-old parts ways with the organization he built from the ground up -- which will likely be thanks only to serious health complications -- Davis will continue to impact the franchise. The 43 Polamalu black jersey
ill-informed decisions he’s made over the past five years have caused enough damage to the organization to garner harmful results well beyond the life of the longtime owner. How ironic that in the same week defensive tackle Tommy Kelly is arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, head coach Lane Kiffin is ready to be fired. Kelly was rewarded with a whopping $50.5 million contract from Davis in the offseason for doing all of nothing in 2007. Kiffin is coming off a 15-point victory in Week 2. But Kiffin is on his way out, and Kelly will likely resume life as normal. Everything seems backward in Oakland. Probably because it is.The Raiders are just two weeks into the 2008 season, sitting 1-1, and coming off a win in which the offense rushed for 300 net yards. After two games, Oakland’s ‘O’ ranks 13th in the NFL in total yardage, second in rushing yardage and second-year passer JaMarcus Russell still hasn’t thrown an interception. The Raiders are alone in second place in the AFC West. And now Kiffin is about to be canned. And only for saying what everyone has wanted to say and already knows about Oakland’s organization: that Davis runs the show. Kiffin refuses to be a puppet to Al’s games. And who would replace him? Somebody more than willing to have his strings pulled by Davis, D-coordinator Rob Ryan.Team sources have already confirmed that Ryan’s curse-filled rant just days before the team’s meeting with Kansas City was a directly ordered assignment from the man upstairs. Davis reportedly told Ryan to say something along the lines of, “I run the defense, and it’s all on me … I meet with the owner in the offseason. He’s the boss, he’s the man that hired me, and that’s been well-documented. I don’t meet with him on game plans,” which were Ryan’s actual words.Of course, there’s no reason why Ryan couldn’t be a great coach. He can motivate, players like him and, most importantly, Davis likes him.But just two weeks into a regular season in which your quarterback is 23 years old, leading rusher is 21, top pass catcher is 22 and head coach is fired is no way to start a campaign. These top offensive weapons (Russell, Darren McFadden and Zach Miller) have seen just one coach in their NFL careers -- the way it should be after only one or two seasons. Somebody like left guard Robert Gallery has been around for three different coaching regimes (and likely soon to be four) that have come and gone since his rookie season just five years ago. Look 4 Brett Favre White jersey
at that result.Firing the 33-year-old Kiffin, the NFL's youngest head coach, would put every player on the Raiders’ roster and every coach on the staff in an unfair, difficult situation. But it’s going to happen. If not today, next week or the week after, then certainly at the end of the season.Al Davis will never be happy with a head coach. His antics over the past half-decade have turned the franchise he loves into the laughingstock of the NFL.Unfortunately, this latest antic may be the straw that broke the camel’s, er Raiders', back.Anthony Carroll can be contacted at (97)

Jeckyll and Hyde Raiders strike again

You know that classic pregame cliché about “which team is going to show up for this matchup”? If nothing else and with damnable consistency, the 2008 appear to have this one answered: Both.Talk about your tale of two halves. In a rerun. For the second straight week, into the virtual recycle bin went my notes on 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
a long-awaited “game ball” column. For the second straight week, the Raiders’ studs (Johnnie Lee Higgins, Shane Lechler, Sebastian Janikowski, Gibril Wilson) and duds (not to name names here, but, ahem, Kwame Harris) were remarkably consistent. Then there are the cases of JaMarcus Russell and DeAngelo Hall: You can count on both of each showing up on Sunday. The first half, see, those were the Raiders their fans wants Higgins starting things off properly with the nice return. Just as last week, Javon Walker got involved early to catch the Charger ‘D’ off guard. (Incidentally, who would’ve guessed, say, three years ago that throwing to Walker would ever be a surprise?) Unfortunately, Russell is hot and cold – hey, a nickname is born: JaMarcus “Hot And Cold” Russell – on the drive and the offensive line is adequate at best. Regardless, Supertoe Janikowski nails the field goal.Later in the quarter, Lechler kills a punt to snuggle San Diego right up to the goal line and the seeming stated goal of this Raiders defense – blitz the s*** out of ‘em – earned a glorious safety. Wilson’s liberation of the ball to cause a fumble would have bagged him a prestigious RealFootball365 game ball, but alas. When this defense is on, it can be awesome, smothering and run-stuffing. Just look at the blitzing on the highlight reel (from the first half, that is)! Slightly gimpy fantasy football sta LaDainian Tomlinson was restrained to just 6 yards on his first five carries and wasn’t a factor until well after the Raiders were deep into their terminal Mr. Hyde phase. And Darren Sproles? Please.Throw in a Chris Johnson interception and the result was a sweet first-half shutout that had 25 minutes’ worth of game clock evaporate before the Chargers saw the 50-yard line. You know that old sports cliché about how a good defense is a good offense? Well, the Raiders have flipped the expression around so that a bad offense is a bad defense. Or a good defense can be made bad by a bad offense. Or something like that. The point is that when this offense is off, it can be brutal, impossible to work with (ah, poor Lane Kiffin) and just plain ugly.Of course, Sunday's defensive self-destruction cannot be entirely blamed on the main anti-Kiffin co-conspirator, Rob Ryan. His ‘D’ did its damnedest to bend but not break, to keep points off the board and L.T. on the turf. But what in Madden’s name can you do if the offense can’t manage more than an 8-yard drive? Leave the Chargers unit with the ball on the field for long enough, they’ll score.Heck, even on the first San Diego scoring drive, it wasn’t all negative. The Chargers had to settle for a field goal after Kirk Morrison managed to make a couple of decent plays and Tomlinson most fortunately dropped an easy pass for a potential first down. (But hey, luck is a part of winning, right?) When is it good to allow a long drive? When you have a double-digit lead, you only give up the field goal, and nearly half the third quarter has been erased from the clock.Unfortunately, that was essentially the last folks would see of the Raider team that Oakland wanted to see show up. Soon Hall was getting beaten underneath for a first down, followed by an illegal contact call against the 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
man and why isn’t someone in the Raiders’ camp noting this pattern wherein Hall gets so easily flustered? Flustered, too, became Wilson on the TD: Burned by Antonio Gates as Philip Rivers nicely rolled right, Wilson immediately turned to blame Michael Huff for his glassy-eyed soft coverage. Not that Wilson was wrong or anything ...Then the offense got up to its old – for 2008 – tricks. Harris was crushed for the fumble-inducing sack, and the mini-drive for the TD thereafter was a no-wonder. No wonder the defense is beat with an offensive line like that. No wonder Russell was so ineffective with an offensive line like that. Speaking of Harris, early in the fourth he continued with the gnarly play, notching a false start, prompting this writer to wonder if these Raiders are soft mentally or whether it’s merely endemic to old No. 77. But before you can say, “Lemme guess, three and out,” things click late for Oakland. Michael Bush runs, Bush runs, Kiffin’s doing the opposite in running with his backup back after digging a hole on the scoreboard ... Hot And Cold scrambles for a first down and when he needs pass protection Harris actually provides. Higgins snags a nice catch or two and now it’s Antonio Cromartie’s turn to lose grip on his coolness with two penalties called. Zach Miller chokes on a nice opportunity, but at least Janikowski ties it up.As it turns out, the Raiders’ special teams, so good this season to this point, also have a dark side. Sproles’ 67-yard return was the final beginning of the ultimate end in Sunday's 28-18 defeat. 43 Polamalu white jersey
A little stat-padding and Luis Castillo’s posterization of Chris Morris on a devastating sack were mere formalities. The wrong Raiders had shown up for the second half. You know that old cliché, “There’s still a lot of football left to play.” Well, there’s still a lot of football left to play. Whether it’s enough to solidify this schizophrenic team that's 1-3 is the next unanswered question for the 2008 Raiders. (55)

Not Quite Game of the Year

OK, so it's a little early to call this the game of the year, but who doesn't want to see the Raider play some smashed-mouthed football and just blow the Broncos out of the Oakland Coliseum?Do we have the tools? Well yea we do, the defense has transformed itself into a bend but don't break kind of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
team and plays for the takeaway.Something that has been lacking for a long while. The offense has flashes of brilliance,..I know, the nay-sayers are ready to point at the low point totals and a large percentage of three and outs, but the Raiders have been in both games into the minutes of the last quarter and managed two last minute drives for scores in both games.Jamarcus Russell has at times just looked awful. Plain and simple, lets just get that out there. He has and there is no denying it. In the same breath you also have to admit his last minute drives looked good. So good it's actually hard to believe it's was the same player. So when the other teams defense needed a stop the most, out lines held up. When they were putting the heat on, they couldn't get to Russell and given a enough time, Russell Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
made the plays and hit his targets. So with a couple of games under his belt, why would he feel a little more comfortable? Now both sides of the line have worked together under fire. Now, Richard Seymour has a better shot of calling and reacting to the defensive calls.I know the Raiders and Broncos play too the final gun fighting tooth and nail, regardless of the score, but this week the Raiders manage a Ten Point Victory!

Al Davis, Tom Cable: Countdown to Unemployment

Anyone who knows anything about the is well aware that Al Davis has a short fuse when it comes to losing. Add to that injury the insult of having three big name rookies drafted on the o-side of the ball the last three years, yet the team can;t rack up more than two hundred yards of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
offense in any given game and you know Al is looking for someone to blame. While most football experts believe Al should look no further than his own mirror for the culprit, we all know he holds himself sacrosanct. Which means, scapegoat, thy name is Tom Cable.Historically speaking, replacing a coach mid-season has never worked, but nothing else works in Oakland these days either. So, make no mistake, Cable;s coaching days are coming to an end, soon. There;s a huge crop of experienced coaches on the sidelines, at golf courses and in TV studios right now. Guys like Cowher, Gruden, Reeves, Shanahan, Dungy and many others are likely candidates for the Raider HC position; at least in Davis; mind. The reality of it is none of those guys would touch the Oakland job with a ten-foot pole. Moreover, neither will any other qualified coach. The job comes with the mother of all poison pills: Al Davis. It;s all smoke and mirrors in Oakland these days, with little results to show for it. When an opposing QB is ;rested; before halftime because he;s already put the game out of the Raider;s reach, we can all hear the fat lady singing, especially Cable. I;m sure there are many Raider ;fans; reading this who will continue to make excuses, rant on about how Davis is some kind of football God, etc, but actions speak louder than words. The team stinks and has stunk for over six seasons now with no end in sight. The only common denominator is Davis. Sure, he was a football genius, and Bo Jackson was a great running back, Ted Hendricks was a great linebacker and Kenny Stabler was a phenomenal QB, but all that happened in the past. What;s happening right now? Thirty-first in the league in total defense. Thirty-second in total passing offense. Twenty-eighth in Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
running offense. Tied for last place in touchdowns scored. The people of Oakland deserve better. Raider Nation deserves better and Al Davis, the man who made his living off those folks, deserves praise; for what he did in the past. Today is a new day. Time for new leadership. Time for a new . In a perfect world, when Cable gets to the unemployment line, he will see a familiar face. The same face that fired him;

Kerry Collins free agency

Kerry Collins should not be too worried about financially supporting himself in 2006. With the recent hiring of Art Shell, more clues have been dropped as to the future of Collins. Up to this point, Shell has expressed loyalty towards Collins, but he is yet to convey any decisive conclusion about the quarterback's future. Regardless, Collins will be a starting quarterback in the NFL next season, whether he is wearing the silver and black or not.In the dawn of the Art Shell hiring, all signs have pointed to a Collins/Raiders contract extension. Already this offseason, owner Al Davis and head coach Art Shell have verbally defended and supported Collins. In a press conference after the firing of Norv Turner, Al Davis defended Kerry Collins saying, "I think Kerry did adequately well considering other factors maybe not seen by the press or fans. He had no running game, and our pass protection slipped." Essentially, Davis was correct in his statements. The running game produced a fourth-lowest 85.6 rush yards per game, and provided no explosive threat to the offense. In fact, the Raiders longest rush last year was just 27 yards-the lowest mark in the NFL. The pass protection also could be placed at the center of the blame, as injuries and poor performances plagued the front five. Mammoth guard Langston Walker played just six games due to injury and third-year linemen Robert Gallery and Jake Grove struggled all season.Head coach Art Shell has also appeared to be pro-Collins. In his preliminary press conference, Shell stated, "All I can say is Kerry Collins has been an outstanding quarterback. Matter of fact, I just spoke to Kerry before I came down here. He is excited about moving forward next year. He is an exciting quarterback. I think he has a chance to be great for us. But those issues will be addressed down the road." The fact that Shell publicly complemented and spoke to Collins within the first few days of his head coaching term also points to a Collins contract extension. But remember, a good 90 percent of fans and the media believed that Ken Whisenhunt would be coaching the Raiders next season. So what if the attitudes of Davis and Shell take a sudden U-turn? Collins could land in Baltimore, with a familiar face at offensive coordinator.Last season, the Baltimore Ravens were the 22nd in passing yardage; in 2004 and 2003 they were last in the NFL, and in 2002 they were 27th. As an offensive coordinator in the NFL, it's nearly impossible to hold your job with such low ranks year-in and year-out. If Collins is released into the market, Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel will not 43 Polamalu black jersey
be shy in showing his support for the quarterback. As a head coach in 2000, Fassel led Kerry Collins and the NY Giants to Super Bowl XXXV, where he ironically lost to his future employer, the Baltimore Ravens. And while the Ravens passing offense improved in Fassel's first year as offensive coordinator, he would most certainly push for Collins if the Raiders were to let him go.At any rate, fans will able to watch Kerry Collins play quarterback next year. Most fans would rather see him play in purple. But up to this point, the bold number "5" appears that it will remain painted silver at home and black on the road.Anthony Carroll can be reached at

Sebastian Janikowski to go? I don't believe it

内容: Rumors surrounding the are always suspect. But when the rumor originates from the Denver Post, it comes across as nothing better than tabloid gossip.Still, there's some substance to the short snippet of 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
speculation offered in Bill Williamson's column Saturday. The article, titled "Foxworth tired of Upshaw bashing," ended with an "Around the league" section. Squished between "Word is the Broncos aren't high on [Kenny] Phillips and may pursue a safety through free agency" and "If Broncos kicker Jason Elam enters free agency, expect Atlanta to make a push for Elam, who has family in Georgia," was:"Some in the league expect the Raiders to part ways with inconsistent kicker Sebastian Janikowski this offseason."Oddly enough, of the five rumors Williamson listed, the one concerning Janikowski was the only that didn't involve the Broncos in any way.Though, it's not as if the 29-year-old kicker has posted a string of consecutive impressive seasons together. Janikowski, a first-round pick of the Raiders in 2000, has been kicking with the team for eight seasons, and has exceeded an 80 percent accuracy mark just three times.Keeping with the Raiders-Broncos theme, Elam has achieved an accuracy mark of 80 percent five times in the past eight seasons and has done so nine times in his 15-year career.Since being drafted, the 250-pound Janikowski has a below-average 76.8 accuracy rating, with his best season coming in 2004 (89.3 percent) and his worst in 2005 (66.7 percent).Last year was another off season. The ex-Florida State standout missed nine kicks on 32 tries, which translates to a 71.9 kicking percentage. However, those numbers are quite misleading. Janikowski was 10 for 11 on kicks under 40 yards and seven for 10 on attempts between 40 and 49 yards. In the 50-plus range, however, the Polish kicker was six for 11.Yet, those 50-plus kicks are also the reason team owner Al Davis reached extremely far in the 2000 draft to grab Janikowski 17th overall, two picks ahead of three-time Pro Bowl running back Shaun Alexander. On his career, the strong-legged kicker is just 16 for 34 on tries over 50 yards -- meaning he's only a strong-legged kicker, not an accurate-legged one.In 2004, Janikowski signed a five-year, $10.5 million contract extension, which means he wouldn't officially become a free agent until the end of the 2009 season. Next season, the 6-foot-2 kicker is expected to make $1.2 million, and he'll earn $1.5 million in 2009.It seems very unlikely, considering Janikowski is already under contract, that Oakland would simply let him go. Plus, the last former first-round draft pick the Raiders released was safety Derrick Gibson, who was selected back in 2001 and let go of Vikings Brett Favre jersey
just prior to last season. Other ex-first-rounders like LB Napoleon Harris and CB Philip Buchanon have been sent away in trades, while names such as Fabian Washington and Robert Gallery are still on the roster. In one sense, then, letting go of a Janikowski would be a bit of a refresher.I wouldn't bet on it, though. Then again, I would never bet on predicting the Raiders' next move.
